]]> Sat Nov 7 2009 37's and 86's...What a 'Grand' day out! http://neil-hendry.fotopic.net/c1775992.html Started by heading up to Chesterfield to capture the late running 'Jorvik Growler' with 37676 37516 and 47851 from Taunton - York, then i played catch up and photted it again at York station. After this i sampled my first Grand Central HST service to the cross with 43084 and 43065 screamng away nicely. Then the next move was to phot the 'constellation' 86's again on their debut tour to Newcastle for GBRf railstaff. With great privilege i was aloud to travel back to Peterborough on the tour, with many thanks to the gaffer for the hospitality!! Enjoy... i know i did!! Next up was 47787 on saloon car 'Amanda' on a run from Derby - St Pancras passing Long Eaton. After getting bored at Stenson the next stop was Crewe DMD for a walk round the scrappers and a view from the gate at Gresty DRS depot. To end the day it was a shot of 6J37 Carlisle - Chirk log train with Virgin 57305 at the helm. Ta Mulli for the lift! Heading to the master shot at Mobberley for a full sun result of 6H03 Oakleigh - Tunstead with 60049. Then a bit further down the track to get the 60 working of the year, 60085 on 6F51 Earles Sidings - Warrington with a rake of MGR's in tow! Then to Acton Bridge for 0Z23 Warrington - Crewe with 5 electrics in the consist, 92041-92036-90035-92003-92037. After this 86609 and 86607 were allocated 4K64 Garston - Crewe freightliner and were again photted in the bling! Too good a day for weather had to end when i arrived at Derby, to see a late running 0Z44 Barrow Hill - Crewe with 20306-37688-47832-37602 coming into platform 1 and departing very spirited! This was a nice end to the days photting apart from it tipping it down and thunder and lightening! Enjoy todays efforts! ]]> Sun Aug 9 2009 The WAG express and 37423 around Nottingham http://neil-hendry.fotopic.net/c1739230.html After a few hours kip in Holyhead i got up early for 57313 on the 0532 Arriva Trains Wales service to Cardiff which i hauled as far as Chester. Then a fast car move to Hucknall (cheers carl!!) for 37423 with Caroline doing the rounds of the midlands with a Derby - Derby via Mansfield and Peterborough. The train is captured at Hucknall foot crossing and then unexpectedly at Notingham as it was diverted through instead of going via Melton as there was a block at Trent Junction, brilliant! With a storming run up the west coast main line we arrived in Carlisle at 1530, half an hour early and the total opposite to the tour yesterday!! We were not the only charter to be in Carlisle today as steam engine 46115 'Scots Guardsman' was also doing a tour from York. After our break we headed south via the s+c re-joining the WCML south of Preston for the run to Warrington. After departure we headed for the North Wales coast and onto old stomping ground for the class. We arrived on time in Holyhead at 0013 in drizzle, but a trip down memory lane was had, and so over to road for the nights lodge, good tour Compass, more like that please!! ]]> Sun Aug 2 2009 Spitfire Railtours 'The Cumbrian Crusader' http://neil-hendry.fotopic.net/c1739175.html Starting at Alfreton at 0830 with 66430, the first of four DRS locos on the tour, this engine took the train to Leeds from where 37607 and 37604 hauled the train over the Settle and Carlisle line to the border city of Carlisle where a few hours break was had. Note that the booked class 20 did not appear. After our break, and after lots of talk and beer, we re-joined the train with not two DRS engines on the front, but just 37087 from DRS and 37676 from WCRC! The rostered 37229 had apparently been failed and with no other DRS 37 to cover, 37676 was scrambled from Carnforth to team up on the train. As the farces started to unfold, there was a vote on what loco we wanted from the choice of GM, naturally we all voted 66 as it would be a guaranteed winner, but no 57007 was sent, the one we all had at Keighley! It got its just desserts when it caught fire near Blackburn on the return and had to be dumped. 60 minutes down departing Blackburn we continued south until we reached Wakefield. Next farce, points failure!! After another 60 minutes of fester we finally got routed avoiding Leeds, back through Wakefield Westgate to Doncaster for an additional set down and then into Sheffield back on path. Arrival at Alfreton in darkness and waving goodbye to the tour just 2 hours late, a good jolly all in all but of course problems could of been avoided by listening to voters!! After a run behind 'teddy-bear' D9513, i decided to bail at Holywell to scoop 37294, and im glad i did! After having it Holywell - Embsay it was declared a failure. Next up was 31435 for a round trip and then 31119. The next departure was booked for the 37 again and it was kick started back into life, but not for long. After managing Embsay - Bolton Abbey, it ran round and was running in multi with 31119 for the return. All was going well, until a big bang, put put poof, a flame out, sparks and then shut down again, 37294 is dead. 31119 then hauled the train to Embsay where the timetable was an hour and half down, walk away!!! ]]> Sun Jul 26 2009 Brighton Rocks tour with AC:DC traction! http://neil-hendry.fotopic.net/c1732668.html New charter operator 'Flamboyant Charters' ran thier second charter from Doncaster - Brighton, which i picked up at Grantham, with 87002 at the helm. The 'van' took us south on the ECML to London and Wembley yard where a loco change was to take place. The 87 detached and our insurance loco 47786 dragged the train from Willesden Railnet - Wembley Reception sidings for 73209 and 73205 to attach and take the train to Brighton. On arrival, with 5 hours to spare, i decided to do 377301 to Seaford as the branch is required track. Once back in Brighton i headed to pebble beach for a snooze, a couple of pints, and then walking back to the station ready for the run back north with traction the same as earlier. A very good tour, well organised and on time. To get there, and because of demand, loco hauled shuttles powered by DRS 47501 and 47802 were used on a Mk3 set to travel between Norwich and Lowestoft. Pics from the haulage and the event itself are shown. Then on a HST up to Newton Abbot for a 142 to Dawlish. Spending the morning on Langstone Rock photing the various HST's and the two charters. First to turn up was 37194 and 37087 on Spitfire's Birmingham - Penzance tour followed soon after by 40145 on Pathfinders Portsmouth - Penzance tour. After these i headed to Bodmin to haul 37142 from Bodmin General - Bodmin Parkway. Then back up to Starcross for the returning Spitfire tour in full bling and then to Westbury for the Pathfinder tour and a night shot of the 40 and 37401. Great Day with thanks to the crew, and the alphabet on Langstone Rock for the morning entertainment. Enjoy! ]]> Sat Jun 20 2009 6F52 Donnington - Arpley and 5X78 Derby - Wembley http://neil-hendry.fotopic.net/c1716076.html 37670 dropped on the Donnington trip from Warrington, and with a time window of just 30 minutes to phot it, it passed bang on time, makes a change for an EWS 37!! Instead of the usual flat wagons with containers of used ammunition, it was carrying wheelie bins from Hull, so i'm told! Heading back to Notts i captured 66728 delivering brand new 378013 on 5X78 Derby Litchurch - Wembley, running round adjacent to platform 6. Then a few bits while heading to Skegness and back, 66056 on liner, Hull Trains Adelante 180111 and then a nice sunset shot of my 158. ]]> Sun Jun 7 2009 The Devonian tour to Paignton http://neil-hendry.fotopic.net/c1709205.html Joining and leaving at Birmingham New Street, Compass Tours were running a tour to Paignton called 'The Devonian'. As i joined the tour 37401 was shut down and 37670 had to push 401 and haul load 12 up the gradient out of New Street! On approach to Camp Hill, 37401 was restarted and the pair continued faultlessly throughout. Arriving half an hour early in the riviera, the whole place was a washout with non stop rain from start to finish, but the pubs were open!! Leaving at 1628 with a good run north and storming up the Lickey clearing the summit at 24mph we arrived in New Street 11 early so i could connect with an early train back to Notts. Good times!! The only lineside shots were from around Oakworth in the morning before it tipped it down, enjoy what was an enjoyable but washed out gala! Alas still two 'tugs' on the coal circuit and a late 0Z57 to get! There was a Crewe - Carlisle light engine move allocated for 37510 + 57008 + 37601 and this was photted storming through Warrington Bank Quay. Next up was 60063 and this was photted at Crosfields (the factory shot) and Carterhouse Junction near Fiddlers Ferry. Second 60 on the circuit was 60087, this was photted at Winwick, Slutchers Lane and Latchford Sidings. To wrap up the day i headed back to Notts via Stafford where i photted 66420, and a while since i seen a pair of 86's so 86605 and 86639 were very welcome on 4L92 Ditton - Felixtowe! To Tamworth and two main points of interest, first was 66707 on Fastline coal, 6Z15 from Immingham - Ironbridge, and then 66152 produced on 6G45 Toton - Bescot engineers trip with four balfour beatty wagons in tow. After hauling all loco's i went lineside around the Ropley area, with the surprise of a few demonstration freights taking place! Loco's available were: 08032, D3358, 33053, 37905, 56098, 73107 and 73201 with varous DMU's participating. Enjoy! The set today was formed of 43048 and 43055 on the only full EMT liveried rake of stock. The train is to run on bank holidays and summer Saturdays throughout the year departing Nottingham at 0811 and 1406, departing Skegness at 1108 and 1708. After this it was down to Long Marston for 0Z87 Long Marston - Worcester. Finally ending the day unexpectedly by heading to Cosford (!!) to get 37401 on 6W57 Bescot - Pwhelli ballast trip. Cheers to Dan B for the 401 gen and Dan C for the fast car moves! Big ta! The 31 was 31285 with UTU2 and DBSO 9702. The train is pictured at Matlock after stopping short and then at Ambergate as the token for the line was replaced. Cheers! After this i went to Margam depot, big thanks to Mr M Esen for letting me round. After this we went to Pengam to get the 37's on the empty stock into Cardiff and then raced up to Ponthir to get the 37's for the last time in full sun! Returning home via Hereford and Birmingham with a bonus shot of 47826 on charter duties at New Street. Big ta to Carl and Dave for the roaming around and the lemon sherbets!! Cheers! ]]> Fri Apr 24 2009 Sunny Colas Spoons: Take Two!! http://neil-hendry.fotopic.net/c1687018.html Whilst having a spare hour before visiting the inlaws, i headed to the green lattice footbridge north of Burton station (5 mins walk) to capture 6Z48 Burton - Dollands Moor empty steel. This week 47749 was leading 47739 on this working in full sun! Here are the phots from this early afternoon. ]]> Thu Apr 23 2009 South Wales, South West England and 37670 at Tamworth http://neil-hendry.fotopic.net/c1686583.html Started early and headed to Newport to connect with Arriva Trains Wales 0532 Holyhead - Cardiff Central WAG Express with 57314 on the front. Hauling to Cardiff i headed up to Queen Street to do the Class 121 on the Cardiff Bay line. That done i went back to Central and hauled a HST to Bristol Parkway to get to Filton Abbey Wood in time for 67017 to haul the short distance to Patchway. Into Bristol Temple Meads and 47818 was sat at the back of the station with a few seagull freinds, and also the Bridgewater flasks were running with 37087 and 37688 so these were captured at Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway. More HST haulage was had to Birmingham and then up to Tamworth to get 37670 returning on 6G45 Toton - Bescot. Brill day all in all and thanks to those for posting the relevant gen to make the day possible! Enjoy! Next stop was Glen Lochy and the charter came snaking loudly through the cutting after receiving the token from Tyndrum. Chasing the charter its next stop was Oban where the 37's ran round. Dalmally Viaduct was next on the agenda and the train was photted crossing Loch Awe. On approach to Crianlarich the shot of the two tractors was possible with the amazing Scottish highlands as a backdrop. With light fading fast it was a quick drive up to Inverhaggie crossing for the tractors storming up the 1 in 60 incline towards Tyndrum Upper, in full sun! Last shot of the 37's was just north of Bridge of Orchy and if they departed on time this would have been in sun as well, alas it wasn't to be. Finally a shot of the Caledonian Sleeper receiving the RETB token at Crianlarich. Phots from today on the north and southbound trip are from Fort William, Loch Eil, Arisaig, Mallaig, Loch Nan Umah Viaduct, Glenfinnan Viaduct and Fort William Yard. At journeys end the landcruise was passed by 67's 030 and 004 on 1Z22 Fort William - Glasgow Central. All done up the northern end of the line we headed for Oban and 37676. This was on the Scottish Chieftan from Oban - Dumbarton Central and was captured at Loch Awe, Glen Lochy and Crianlarich in fading light. Stayed the night in Crianlarich ready for the Pathfinder tour to Oban in the morning.... After an 8 hour drive we arrived at Fort William to meet 37401 chugging nicely on 6 JJA's ready to work 6K66 09:20 Fort William - Glenfinnan. Shots include the train at Loch Eil Outward Bound Station, Locheilside, Glenfinnan Viaduct and Corpach. To end the day i decided to haul 67007 from Fort William to Spean Bridge, where i was spending the night ready for the 'West Highlander'. ]]> Fri Apr 10 2009 Mid Norfolk / DB Schenker Diesel Gala http://neil-hendry.fotopic.net/c1674647.html Mid Norfolk Diesel Gala weekend has been one i have looked forward to for quite some time, as DB were providing visiting loco's to Bolster the home fleet and give that extra variety to the Gala. The dream shot had to be done before anything, and this was achieved with 37425 on BR blue stock passing Crownthorpe on a Wymondham bound train in the morning. Then back to Dereham to claim three of the visiting loco's on one train, with 66144 and 67008 in multi on the 1445 Dereham - Wymondham and 60059 'Swinden Dalesman' on the return. That done it was back lineside for the chopper and 37425 (bowled by a cloud at the last second!!) and then finally hauling the last train of the gala with all four visitors on the front preparing to head home, before ending by heading back to Dereham with preservation newbie 56040. Enjoy! Arriving on time into Margam 60024 was then attached for some branch line activity. First branch to be traversed was the Ogmore Vale line before reversing at Tondu and heading towards Machen with the tractor at the business end of the train! Once reaching the summit of Machen the tug lead us back into East Usk yard where, for some the highlight of the tour, 08567 joined the train for the ride to Uskmouth. Once reaching the Network Rail limit the 'rods' hauled us back into Newport station. With 37401 now heading home, everybody was asking the question how one tractor would get up the Lickey Incline successfully? Unfortunately Network Rail had other plans and dispatched a shed to assist in banking, 66058 being the participant. After breasting the top around 26 late, the 37 plodded on until reaching terminating point of Nottingham bang on time at 2230. Cheers to all for the great entertainment throughout the day. Unfortunatly due to faults 37109 and 37418 were not operational for the gala, however in thier absence the rest of the resident fleet were performing, giving me a chance to claim my winners for haulage. Arriving slightly later than anticipated due to transport 'jacking in staffordshire' everything was done and dusted by 5pm. Cheers! Loco's arrived since the last visit are: 08509, 08890, 37046, 37058, 37196, (the remains of 37201), 37221, 37238, 37717, 56011 and two coaches from EMU 310 051. Part cut and probably to be seen for the last time was 56064, with bodysides demolished and only engine and cabs remaining. Enjoy the phots! Fisrtly shots from Derby with 66156 re ballasting the pilot lines and parts of etches park with Fastline coal passing through. 60018 headed north on 6M11 Washwood Heath - Peak Forest, one of a handful remaining. Heading to Stenson for a few hours there were plenty of Freightliner sheds to be seen as well as a triple header of 'red boys' on 6D44 Bescot - Toton. The final highlight was 60068 on 6E41 Westerleigh - Lindsey empty oil, captured at Barrow on Trent and Barton Lane. Just missing 37401 at Toton was a bad start to the day, however luck soon changed, first main interest was 57602 on 0V70 Brush Loughborough - Old Oak Common, next up was 47739 and 47727 on new flow 6Z48 Burton - Dollands Moor steel with the big lightbulb in the sky making an appearance! Two tugs in 5 minutes is rare and so when 60068 turned up on 6E41 followed by 60044 on the Ironbridge - Lindsey that was a surprise! Up to Toton in case 37401 appeared, but to no avail, and so 66055 on 6G45, and a variety of other sheds including returnee 66031. Strange mixture of weather over the day with full sun one minute and rain or hail the next, nevertheless a good gala as always, albeit the stupid continental stock! Photo's from Wansford and Castor, oh and 66725 appearing at Peterborough en route home. The motive power was 37706 and 37676. After photting units at Leeds i did the charter part-fare to Edinburgh and then headed to North Queensferry and Jamestown Viaduct to capture them on the return. Over to Plumley to see if the Oakleigh - Tunstead was running but no sign after an hour so moved onto Acton Bridge. Loco's seen at Acton Bridge were 66620, 66509, 66543, 90048, 66091, 92041, 66069, 90036, 66431, 66159, 47501, 47810, 47375, 66414 and finally army beast 60040. On hearing that the Valley flasks had dropped today with 20303 and 20304 i headed to Saighton, near Chester, to capture them passing the old station remains. En route home i popped into the remanents of the once mighty Crewe DMD to see whats left of the loco's including 37294, 37426, and several 56's. This train was captured at North Staffs Jct and Melton Mowbray station. Also photted today was 97301 and 97302 on the Shrewsbury - Derby route learner and 66152 on Mountsorrel Lafarge stone trains at Cossington and Frisby. ]]> Tue Feb 24 2009 Ped chasing and the return of 31465 http://neil-hendry.fotopic.net/c1658971.html Starting at Sawley 31602 propels DBSO 9702 + train on 4Z10 Derby RTC - Old Dalby Test Track. With time to kill before the next test train i headed round the back of Toton TMD to photograph some of the stored stuff, in attendance was 37402, 37405, 60003, 60098 and surprisingly 67018 which looks to have been used for spares(!). After a relatively quiet hour with only 66099 running light to Burton, the second test train in the form of 2Q08 with 31454 and returnee 31465. Once in Birmingham i travelled up to Tame Bridge Parkway to see 67022 on a Wrexham diadram, also photting the local London Midland and Arriva units. Main reason for visiting Wellington was to phot 66431 on 6Z76 Crewe - Donnington RFT. The train was a gauging trial, and the sun was playing ball so perfect shots to be had. After this i nipped up to tamworth for 56301 on 4O90 as it passed on the high level with the Doncaster - Grain Intermodal service, lightly loaded today. For anyone who wants to see a voyager refurbished without a shop, my pics of 221126 are in this gallery. Back at Notts and 66415 on hire from DRS powers 6Z15 Immingham - Ironbridge coal. ]]> Sat Feb 7 2009 Anglia Wonderings http://neil-hendry.fotopic.net/c1649866.html Starting at a snow covered Ely the snow was falling hard and fast and it was looking like it was going to be that way the majority of the day, however by the time i reached Ipswich there was hardly a speck of the stuff! As usual Ipswich was a hive of activity with both passenger and freight, and how nice it was to see a pair of 86's again on 4L89! Up to Stowmarket for a shot of 37682 in Stow Marsh Lane, and then down to Colchester to see if there was a thunderbird, however there wasn't? Up to Manningtree for a few phots before heading to Ipswich and finally Norwich before going home. Enjoy! Wednesday the 4th the gen filtered through that 86101 was doing a loaded training run from Crewe - Carlisle - Crewe as 1Z87, so after work i headed for Warrington and up to Winwick Junction for the 86 on its return. Literally the Pendolino was in full sun when it passed and the 86 was a mere 3 minutes behind, just as the sun dipped for 30 seconds producing the slightly fuzzy shot, DAMN CLOUDS!! Also finally trying to be arty i captured 56018 on a rake of hoppers in Arpley yard, happy days! Starting at Sutton Bridge Junction near Shrewsbury she appeared and performed a nice clagging standing start with over 400 tonnes of ballast in tow. On the chase we next caught up with her at Welshpool where it was basking in the gorgeous sun! Next port of call (since picnic island was full of cars!) was just the other side of Caersws, where she storms towards the possetion site. Next up was the level crossing at Aberdovey where the sun was becoming awkward, before finally reaching journey's end at Fairbourne where we found the tractor 'hiding' under the avalanche shelter. After a couple of hours at Barmouth and the tractor not coming over the bridge it was time to head home... I got tipped off soon after departure that this working had been cancelled but 4Z43 Carlisle - Haverton Hill was booked to run with 37682 instead. On arrival at Stockton i was lucky enough to catch 6V95 Stockton - Cardiff scrap departing TJ Thomsons with 57006 complete with 'The Marauder' Headboard. After the Grand Central HST and an hour and a half had passed, i headed back to the station just as 4Z43 appeared, with 47712 on the front! After the Hardendale 66019, Grand Central Trams and 47712 returned i started heading home, with 86901 being on offer at York. ]]> Tue Jan 20 2009 Farewell to SWT 4-VEP 3417 'Gordon Pettitt' http://neil-hendry.fotopic.net/c1639646.html Starting early doors i headed to London, bit of number crunching to do before heading to Woking for the slammer. Few photo's were had from Clapham Junction due to the dire weather, but by the time i reached Vauxhall you wouldn't think it was the same day! With the big lightbulb in he sky it was the chance to get some photo's of the SWT units with Westminster as the backdrop. After a short while photting here it was time to head for Woking. When i arrived the private charter was just rolling into platform 1, and this was 73109 hauling 3417 on the 1050 Bluebell special from Woking to East Grinstead. So on for the bash i went!! On arrival at East Grinstead the 73 was to run round and propel the EMU onto the Bluebell railway's 'new' metals. The crowds gathered to witness the first train on this piece of track in over 40 years and the beginning of the new rail link from Network Rail at East Grinstead to the Bluebell line. A presentation was held by founders of the Bluebell railway, SWT management and of course Mr Pettitt himself, in which the transfer of £1 was made to preserve the EMU on the line. A small dedication ceremony was held and a plaque presented to Mr Pettitt for his efforts and proffessionalism towards the railway industry and to the celebration of the preservation of the 4-VEP. There is still a lot to do on the line to get it fully connected and up to its full running length, but with events like today the detrmination shows that anything is possible. I would like to personally thank SWT and Mr Gordon Pettitt for allowing me to travel aboard the special train today, all the best for the future. Next up was 37706 on 5Z47 Carnforth - Barrow Hill with the new West Coast coat of paint to show off. The test train coach is being taken to Toton so it can be put in EWS's management train for 125mph testing on the WCML soon. I almost missed the train arriving as it was running 25 early passing Long Eaton town crossing. I then headed up Toton bank to see what was there and what the peds were upto. After realising they had dropped off MENTOR and were coupling up, i ran onto the A52 bridge to catch them powering off the depot and reversing, before they headed to Derby light engine. ]]> Sun Jan 11 2009 31271 'DMU Drag Day' at Nene Valley http://neil-hendry.fotopic.net/c1636596.html 31271 was performing 9 round trips on the Nene Valley Railway today, in order to raise funds for the A1A group and ultimately get 31418 back in order. The loco was playing well to the crowds and passengers alike with excessive clag and thrash!! I took three round trips and an hour photting lineside between Orton Mere and Ferry Meadows. Also on site was 37518, 47270 and 56311 receiving a turbo-charger change. 56128 (56313) was inside the shed but not available to photograph, booo! A great day was had all in all, just needed the temperature raising a bit! ]]> Sat Jan 10 2009 Wensleydale Class 47 Day http://neil-hendry.fotopic.net/c1635059.html Yomping down from Scotland in the early hours of Sunday morning, 47715 and 47703 were out to play on the Wensleydale Railway. At first it was only going to be 47715 out all day as 47703 had power problems with one end of the locomotive. After doing the first round trip to Redmire, it was announced the the next train would be top and tail. The former St Mungo performed well entertaining passers by and photographers alike with its plume of black clag! On the return i decided to bail at Leyburn as a 40 minute luch was sheduled, and so it was time to go lineside. Several locations were taken, Leyburn caravan park crossing, Finghall crossing, Bedale station (with signal box still in use!) and Leeming bar level crossing. As a surprise on the last trip, in order to get 47715 back on the other end, M.O.D 'rods' 03144 did the draw back on the stock into the station much to the delight of shunter scratchers on the train. After this it was time to head home. Big thanks to Mr Taylor for the ferrying over the weekend, much appreciated, enjoy! Then the day begins with the two home 37's doing a test run before i go on the first train to Birkhill. Bailing there i head into the field for a phot of the only double header of the day with guest 37611 topping 37025 on the 1050 Bo'ness - Birkhill. Bashing 611 back to Bo'ness i decided to go lineside for a bit and get several shots in the Kinneil area. Once light started to fade, to avoid back-lit shots of arrivals 37403 and 37413, i headed to the viewing area and grabbed a few snaps of the beasts! Another couple of final trips on the line finished with a cab ride in 37025, and what a loud machine she is!! A cracking day ended with a couple of night shots of 37175. Big thanks to the SRPS for such a well organised event including the co-incidental 5 tractor line up! All the best for the future to the boys there and i look forward to sampling 37403 with working ETH very soon!!!
